Autumn's here and it's time to get out and have fun with your dog, right? But as the weather changes, we need to keep them safe, too.
Keep reading as we talk about 8 things you can do to keep your pet happy and safe this autumn. Whether you're out and about or staying at home, these tips will help keep them safe and sound.
Keeping Your Dog Safe Outside & Inside This Autumn
Just like the leaves are changing colour, your pet's needs are changing too. The changes around your home and outside can affect them.
Here are a few things to keep in mind to make sure your dog's safe when you're out and about this autumn:
#1 Keep an Eye on the Weather
Autumn weather can change quickly, so be prepared! Before you head out with your dog, check the forecast and make sure you know what to expect.
If your pet is small, it might need a jacket or sweater when it gets cold. You may want to try this 100% natural dog paw balm, “Pre-walk Barrier” that helps protect paws against environmental pollutants such as pollen, road salt and chemicals on the ground.
Always bring water for your pet, and be ready to head back inside if it starts raining or gets too cold.
#2 Be Careful With School Supplies
Just like you might have nibbled on an eraser when you were a kid, your dog might be tempted to chew on school supplies, too. But it's important to keep them safe and make sure they can't get to them. Some things, like glue or markers, can be dangerous if swallowed. Others, like pencils, erasers, or paperclips, could cause problems in their tummy.
The best thing to do is to put away school supplies that you don't use often in a box with a lid that your pet can't open. You could also set up a special space for your kids to do their homework where your pet can't bother them. And get your kids in the habit of putting their books, pencils, and other stuff in their backpacks and zipping them up when they're done.
#3 Keep Your Dog Away from Mushrooms and Mould
Dogs love to sniff around, but they shouldn't be eating mushrooms they find in the garden or on walks. Mushrooms and mould grow more this time of year, and they can be dangerous for your dog.
If your dog starts sniffing at a spot and looks like it's going to munch on something, gently guide it away to a safer place.
If a mushroom or mould is eaten, try to carefully collect a sample in a bag without touching it. Take the sample to your vet right away, just in case it's poisonous.
#4 Don't Give Halloween Candy to Your Dog
Keep candy out of reach of your dog this Halloween – it's fun for everyone, but only safe treats for your pooch! They shouldn't be eating any of your treats! Keep all candy up high, in the fridge, or freezer, so your pet can't get to it. And always put candy away after you're done.
If your pet looks sad because they aren't getting any treats, why not spoil them with some delicious and healthy Halloween treats from our limited selection? We've got all kinds of goodies, from natural chews to fun Halloween dog toys and even probiotics to keep their tummies happy.
Don't leave candy wrappers around either, because your pet might try to eat those, too! And never, ever give your pet chocolate – it can make them very sick. Some other candies are bad for pets, too, like those with xylitol or other artificial sweeteners. Some candies, like gum, chewy candy, and hard candy, can be a choking hazard for pets.
#5 Cold Weather Can Be Dangerous
Don't leave your dog outside for too long, especially if it's below freezing. It's best to keep them inside or only outside for short periods, like 15-20 minutes at most. Puppies, older pets, and small animals are even more sensitive to the cold, so keep a close eye on them.
#6 It's Time To Let Your Dog's Fur Grow Back
Your dog needs their thick fur to stay warm and safe from the cold, just like you need a winter coat. Don't shave double-coated dogs—their fur is their natural protection.
PlantBase GmbH Organic Coat Oil is a perfect way to keep their coat healthy and shiny. Made with high-quality almond, argan, and coconut oil, it helps to nourish sensitive skin, moisturize dry coats, and leave their fur looking amazing. It even has cacay oil for cell growth and pine needle oil, which gives it a nice scent and has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.
#7 Decorations Can Be Dangerous For Pets
Autumn brings the holidays, and that means lots of decorations around the house. You're excited to decorate your home, and your dog is probably just as excited to explore all the new sights and smells. But before you start hanging lights and setting out decorations, remember to be a bit extra careful around your pet.
Think about it from their perspective – suddenly there are new things everywhere, dangling ornaments, sparkly lights, and maybe even a delicious-smelling candle or two. It's tempting for a curious pet to investigate, but it's our responsibility to ensure they stay safe.
Put away anything that could be dangerous, like cords or breakable ornaments. If you use candles, keep them out of reach and make sure they're natural and non-toxic. And when you're not around, keep your dog in a safe space.
#8 Reduce Your Dog's Anxiety on Bonfire Night
Bonfire Night can be scary for dogs because of the loud noises and bright lights from the fireworks. Some dogs show their fear clearly, while others might mask their anxiety with subtle signs. But whether your dog is trembling, barking, or hiding, their fear is real and can be very upsetting. It's important to remember that even if a dog doesn't react dramatically, it doesn't mean they aren't experiencing stress.
With Bonfire Night on the 5th of November just around the corner, here are our 3 top tips to help keep your dog comfortable during those firework displays.
Firstly, create a safe space. Keep them indoors with windows, doors, and curtains closed. Turn on the TV to help mask the loud noises. Secondly, offer comfort and reassurance. If you stay calm, your dog will be more likely to stay calm too! Stay with your dog during the fireworks, offering cuddles, gentle words, and maybe even one of their favourite natural rubber toys to help them feel secure. If you must leave the house, find a trusted friend or pet sitter who can care for your dog in a safe and quiet environment.
